Objectives:
Length of pregnancy
Required BW and back fat thickness at the beginning and at the end of pregnancy
Aim of feeding
Feeding phases
Protein, energy, and fibre contents of the pregnant sow diet
Length of pregnancy:
114 days
Required BW and back fat thickness at the beginning and at the end of pregnancy
Insemination day 210 → BW ~120kg → Backfat ~14-16mm
End of pregnancy → BW ~ 180kg (20kg fetuses) → Backfat ~18-20mm
Aim of feeding- Feeding objectives for gestation and lactation:
- DO NOT OVERFEEED !! (worst misstake) → leads to embryonic mortatlity, farrowing dificulty and heat stress
- 🚫Prevent large changes
- 🚫prevent condition loss during lactation
- Maintain BCS → (18-20mm fat)
- Optimize repro performance
Feeding phases
- First 3 day after AI→ Keep feed low to avoid embryonic loss (1.8-2.3kg/sow)
- Day 4-30 → Feed according to CONDITION of animal → we want 18-20mm backfat
- Day 31-90 → Maintain optimal BCS (1.8-2.3kg/sow)
- Day 91-113 → Increased feed for fetal and placental dev. & prevent ketosis (2.7-3.6kg/sow)
- Day 114 → Give Liquid laxative diet to prevent obstipation…. (mg sulfate, potassium cholrate) (adding more fiber 1 day before farrowing)
Feeding the pregnant sows
- 3 basic components → maintenance , maternal weigth gain, fetal growth and (mammary gland growth)
- req for maintenance are influenced by BW of sow ****& enviroment
- Mainteneance energy req 75-85% of total enrgy req
- Older heavier sows and ⬆️ nutrient need
