Weaning at 6 weeks is good, because digestive stress is negligible
-
Early weaning (before 21 days) causes high digestive stress →
- Stress causes poor gut structure
- Stress = Cortisol = decreases GI motility = less fibre uptake → ⬇️microbiota → poor immune function
- Diet should be similar to sow milk → milk replacer/pre-starter
- CP 25-26% ????
- Starch must be Heat-treated
- Fat or oil can be added
- improve taste with sugar (small amount)
- Get it used to soild feed on first week
-
Creep feed (milk replacer or pre-starter)
- Since sow milk is not enough after 10 days the piglet will become interested in creep feed. It has more nutrients than sows milk (CP 21%, essential AA, mineral, organic acid)
- organic acid role → boost digestion since digestive enyzmes not able to hydrolyze completly yet
-
Growers feed
-
Post-weaning diarrhoea → Ingestion of E. coli, attaches and colonizes to intestinal ep cells and release endotoxins causing diarrhoea and shedding.
-
Correct Enviroment after weaning
- Deteriorated conditions:
- Exposure to cold stress
- non-cleaned pens
- high stocking
- pigs from different litters
- To fast feed change from starter to weaner diet
- Optimum conditions
- temp 28, disinfected nice pens
- low stocking density
- from only 2 litters
- 3 day feed change transition
